How it all started

The history of Mondaine begins with one man, the visionary and creator behind the face of the SBB clock. In 1943, Swiss engineer, Hans Hilfiger, while working for the Swiss Railway Station decides to design a clock that will synchronize the departure time for all of the trains coming and leaving in Zurich’s main station.

The evolution

In 1951, Erwin Bernheim, founds his own watch company Mondaine, which becomes well-known for was creating high-quality watches that were reliable, cheap to repair, and marketable in huge quantities. The business becomes so successful that the watches were eventually dispatched all over the world by the Mondaine factory located in Solothurn.

From station clock to wristwatch

In 1986, Erwin’s sons, Andre and Ronnie, saw an existing potential for a more modern design to take over, one that would represent the true spirit of industrial watchmaking. They decide to follow their entrepreneurial instinct, thus propelling the transition of the famous SBB Railway clock from station clock to wristwatch.

Sustainability at Mondaine.

Mondaine is one of the first entirely carbon-neutral watch companies in the world. The photovoltaic system on the factory roof covers more than the 80% of the total electricity requirements.
